Stuttgart is where both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche started, and each has a museum beside its plant. You can do both in a day, but most people pick one — here is how they differ.
Mercedes-Benz Museum
The bigger of the two, in Untertürkheim. A lift takes you to the top of a spiralling building and you walk down through 130-odd years of history — the first automobile, racing cars, buses, fire engines, popemobiles — with the company’s story set against world events on each floor. Allow two to three hours.
Porsche Museum
Smaller and more focused, in Zuffenhausen, in a sharp white building propped on angled columns. Around eighty cars, mostly sports and racing models, in one bright open hall. An hour and a half to two hours is enough, and it is the easier visit with children who tire quickly.
Good to know
- Both are on the S-Bahn — Neckarpark for Mercedes-Benz, Neuwirtshaus for Porsche
- Both are closed on Mondays
- Both have a restaurant or café and a shop; Mercedes-Benz also runs factory tours (book ahead)
- Reduced or free entry in the last hour before closing is offered at times — check the current terms
