Inland from the coast, about an hour from Dénia, two sights that people usually do together: a dramatic mountain village and a run of waterfalls and pools.
Guadalest
A tiny village on a rock spur, its castle and bell tower perched above a turquoise reservoir and reached through a gateway cut in the stone. The setting is the whole point — it is one of the most photographed villages in Spain and gets very busy by late morning. A handful of small museums, craft shops and a couple of viewpoints.
Fuentes del Algar
A few kilometres away near Callosa d’en Sarrià, a stretch of river running over rock in a series of falls and clear green pools, set up for swimming with walkways and an entrance fee. Cold water, busy in summer, best early in the day.

- About an hour from Dénia; the two are 15 minutes apart and pair naturally
- Go early — Guadalest at coach-tour time is a different place
- The Algar pools charge admission and have a car park; water shoes help
